Collecting Hail

Ever since the damaging hailstorm that hit last May, I think twice and seriously when the weathermen predict severe storms with hail. How big will the hail be? Will it damage our roof again?

Thankfully, this week’s hail was small and manageable. We watched it bounce and collect on the trampoline, then Jeremy and Ruth hurried out to gather and inspect it.

They found that each hailstone had rings in it.

Jake gave a quick lesson on why that is.

Final Field Trip: Adler

We took our final field trip of the school year to the Adler Planetarium.

IMG_4612

Jake played hooky from his science classes that day so he could join us.

IMG_4590

When we first arrived, the kids were challenged to build an apparatus that would take water from Earth to Mars.

IMG_4593

Jeremy’s favorite exhibit was Mission Moon, which followed the life of astronaut Jim Lovell. They had the actual Gemini 12 capsule on display. It was amazing to know that it actually went into space!

IMG_4599

Then the kids landed on the moon.

IMG_4596

Derek explored Antarctica wearing a heavy coat and gloves…and shorts.

IMG_4607

They performed experiments with electricity from plasma balls.

IMG_4604

The weather was gorgeous, so we ate lunch outside by the lake.

IMG_4610

IMG_4611

He’s got the whole Earth in his hands.

IMG_4613

What a great way to cap off our school year!

Bubbie Baseball

In honor of Jeremy’s approaching birthday, we are featuring him playing his favorite sport, America’s Pastime.

Besides batting,

IMG_4561

IMG_4617

his favorite positions on the field are pitcher and catcher (along with every other player on the team, since, let’s face it, those are the only positions that consistently face action at his level).

Sometimes he needs a little help from a big brother putting on the catcher’s gear.

His fan club waits for the game to begin.

Homemade Bread Bowls (and a soup recipe)

I found this idea recently, and now it has become a family favorite. It’s as easy as

One (form biscuit dough on the muffin cups of an upside-down muffin tin)

IMG_1824

Two (bake them for 10-15 minutes)

IMG_1825

Three (fill the bowls with soup or chili)

Our latest soup de jour is Black Bean Salsa Soup. With baseball schedule in high gear, I am thankful for E-A-S-Y dinners!

403768

INGREDIENTS:
2 (15 ounce) cans black beans, drained
and rinsed
1 1/2 cups vegetable broth
1 cup chunky salsa
1 teaspoon ground cumin
4 tablespoons sour cream
2 tablespoons thinly sliced green onion

DIRECTIONS:
1. In an electric food processor or blender, combine beans, broth, salsa, and cumin. Blend until fairly smooth.
2. Heat the bean mixture in a saucepan over medium heat until thoroughly heated.
3. Ladle soup into 4 individual bowls, and top each bowl with 1 tablespoon of the sour cream and 1/2 tablespoon green onion.

Shelter For a Day

For one nearly 36-hour period, we were a local animal shelter, taking in two dogs who formerly resided next door. There is a long back story which I will not delve into here.

Guess who was especially thrilled at this notion?

IMG_4457

There are animal lovers…and there are ANIMAL LOVERS. Ruthie would be in the latter camp.

We agreed with our former neighbors to hold their two abandoned dogs for a week while they prepared to ship them to their new home.

Like I said, it’s a long back story.

Jim and Ruthie went to the Aurora shelter to pick up the dogs on Friday. The dogs were in terrible condition, so Jim went to work right away scrubbing, soaping, and snipping fur.

IMG_4452

IMG_4454

This man has a generous, compassionate heart.

Though we loved on the dogs by keeping them fed and watered,

IMG_4456

and walking them,

IMG_4462

it was clear after one night that we did not have the capacity to care for them and re-train them. So Jim and Ruthie loaded them back into the car and returned them to the Aurora shelter. There were many tears shed that day.

Running the Race

Waaaaay back in the fall, my mom signed Jake and me up for the Soldier Field 10-mile run that was to take place Memorial Day weekend.

10 miles sounded so doable back then. I figured I’d have several months to train. But after a long, nearly non-running winter, followed by a not-very-motivated-to-run spring, 10 miles began to seem like a big looming mountain; I wasn’t sure I’d even be able to cross the finish line before they closed the course. I had sorry images of being trailed by the police car with its lights on, announcing to all that I was bringing up the rear, the last one of 18,000 runners.

Well, we all finished (far from last). And I thoroughly enjoyed running with my mom the entire race.

IMG_4522

Here we are before the race commenced.

IMG_4525

I’m sure there are devotional books out there relating running to the Christian life. If not, there should be, because in many ways running is an allegory to walking with Jesus. For those who are interested, here is a quick list off the top of my head.

1. I used to run marathons. Those would be 26.2 miles long. Yet 10 miles was a big challenge for me because so many years have passed since running long distances. When it comes to muscles, if you don’t use it, you lose it. I have found that it’s no different with disciplines of the faith: prayer, knowing the Bible, obedience, etc.. If I stop praying regularly, that ‘muscle’ diminishes.

2. Running with a partner makes the race so much easier! I know for a fact that if I ran the 10 miles by myself, I would have been more tired at the end, probably would have been tempted to give up a few times along the way. God made us to be in community. We were never meant to journey through life alone. The journey is actually easier when we are walking with others.

3. During the entire race, my mind is on the goal: cross the finish line. This is what keeps me persevering through pain and discouragement. As a Christian, my eyes are fixed on Jesus in this life. I know that I will see Him face to face one day. That keeps me going, no matter how much pain and discouragement I may encounter along the way.

4. Training is key to running a race well. Oh, there are so many analogies within this one topic. You must build up the miles gradually or you are at risk for injuries. Training strengthens those muscles that you need for the race. Training develops the habits you need to finish well. When you train hard, the race itself becomes easier.

Of course, at the end of the day, any physical discipline pales in comparison to the importance of spiritual discipline! Physical training strengthens this temporary body; spiritual training strengthens the soul, which is eternal.

“For bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. (1 Timothy 4:8)

Family Ties

Between birthdays and Mother’s Day, we’ve spent lots of time with family over the past couple weeks. Mother’s Day was filled with baseball, paper airplanes,

IMG_4435

and toads.

IMG_4433

Pretty girls holding toads.

IMG_4427

The following weekend, Jake took a time lapse video on our way to Grandma and Grandpa’s house.

We had Grandma’s famous applesauce cake two weekends in a row, and in homage to a new business in the family, Peter took a picture of the cake after the Corner Mouse got to it.

2015-05-10 15.02.40

(More to come on the new business once they get their website up and running!)

Pickel

We are continuing the made-up word titles on our blog with the latest post.

Now that classes are winding down for Jake, our kitchen counter and table are consumed with chemicals and wires.

His latest project (in my own laymen words) required a solution of liquids

IMG_4447

along with copper wires and a 9V battery and graphite from a pencil.

IMG_4446

Finally, he put a nickel in the solution, and after a few minutes, the nickel became copper-plated.

IMG_4448

From a distance, it looked like a penny, so Jake named the result a “pickel”.

JARA

You’ve heard of CARA.

We are JARA–the Johanik Area Runners’ Association.

With the weather warming up and the ground thawing, the kids and I are enjoying the opportunity to run outside. And to make it even more fun, Derek and Peter have joined the Asics shoe club.

IMG_4439

Here is the group on a recent neighborhood run.

You gotta love the entourage!

Molly’s Mantra

Each morning, Molly makes the rounds to each of us who are scattered throughout the house. She sits within arm’s reach and stares at us until we acknowledge her and pet her.

According to Derek, she is pleading, “Here am I, pet me.”

2015-05-06 10.38.08

How can you resist a face like that?

Sushi Special

Our family loves to eat sushi.  However, we do not like to pay for sushi.

We were feeling adventurous earlier this week and decided to try our hand at making our own sushi. Seaweed is the key ingredient, and it is quite inexpensive.

IMG_4391

We heated it up in the oven for a few minutes.

2015-05-06 17.28.13

Meanwhile, we cooked up some rice. After a little research, we found that a little rice vinegar and a little sugar make the rice sticky.

2015-05-06 17.28.18

Then the concoctions began. We had filling ingredients like cucumber, red pepper, crab meat, avocado, tuna, salmon, and cream cheese as options.

Peter took charge right off the bat.

2015-05-06 17.42.32

Ruthie enjoyed “cleaning the counter” as he went along.

2015-05-06 17.43.22

Then Derek stepped up to the plate to create his own sushi roll.

2015-05-06 17.48.56

He put a little of everything in his, affectionately calling it the Loaded Joe.

2015-05-06 17.49.16

We laid all the rolls out on the table so we could each sample all of them.

2015-05-06 17.55.50

Aren’t they pretty? Peter–always conscious of the presentation–curled some cucumber skin and arranged it with some pickled ginger.

2015-05-06 17.31.27

Fun!

2015-05-06 17.59.40

Tasty!

2015-05-06 18.01.34

And easy on the grocery bill!

When we finished the meal, the food artist in Peter was awakened, and he asked if he could make some fruit pizza for dessert.

Um, yes.

Baking Buddies

As a Christmas present, Aunt Judi bought Peter a Wilton Cooking Class. She thought he’d enjoy it more with his favorite cousin, so she paid for Hannah to join him.

Thanks, Judi!

And the rest of us were eager to eat their creations!

A Quiver of Arrows

2015-04-26 13.32.20

Jake and Derek rode their bikes to Blackwell last weekend, while the rest of us (including the dog) assumed the role of arms-bearers and drove their bows and arrows to meet them there.

2015-04-26 13.50.52

The place was packed, so it was crucial that they followed the archery range etiquette.

First, you shoot all the arrows in your quiver.

2015-04-26 13.23.20

2015-04-26 13.27.49

Then, when everyone in the range has depleted their quiver, everyone yells, “Clear” and they retrieve their arrows.

2015-04-26 13.24.35

2015-04-26 13.30.19

You get bonus points for smiling. (At least with Mom)

2015-04-26 13.31.40

Meanwhile, the three younger kids and I, along with Molly, hiked up the little-known landmark in Warrenville, Illinois, Mt. Trashmore.

2015-04-26 13.50.14

From here, we took lots of pictures,

while Molly made a new friend named Napolean.

Scratch that, Ruthie made a new friend named Napolean.

ISS Spotting

A couple weeks ago, we studied the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. We were captivated, imagining what it must have been like to be the first human to ever walk on the moon.

Our history curriculum recommended a DVD series made by Discovery Channel, called When We Left Earth.

41RGpprOPrL

I highly recommend that you watch this. I couldn’t get over all of the original footage that they show. We picked it up at the library.

The series ends with the International Space Station.

This led Jake to check his NASA app and find out when the ISS was going to fly over next.  Here is a website that shows when the ISS will fly over a given location.

It was scheduled to fly over at 8:40pm, so at 8:30, everyone was outside with eyes toward the sky. We had the telescope, but it was actually easier to see the spacecraft with the naked eye, since it moved so quickly.

IMG_4354

Jeremy was every bit as interested as Jake to spot this man-made machine in space.

IMG_4356

Amazing to think that people are living on it right now. If you squint your eyes tightly, you might be able to make out a bright spot in the picture. Though it was much easier to see in person.

IMG_4355

Also, if you’re interested, here’s a website that shows a live feed of the earth from the ISS. Beautiful!

If you watch it for just a few minutes, it’s impossible not to recognize God’s majesty and creativity.

Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it. (Deuteronomy 10:14)

Birthday Fun

We officially marked Jake’s birthday on Sunday with family. He blew out seventeen candles.

IMG_4322

He opened presents, surrounded by a fan club.

IMG_1349

Here was the wrapping paper from one of the presents.

IMG_4326

Sam was inspired by watching Jake’s water polo game the day before.

IMG_4312

IMG_4314

He played with one of his presents outside.

IMG_1681

Derek joined him. Neither boy was the least bit bothered by the rain.

IMG_1667

IMG_1686

IMG_1676

While Jake was out with his bow, others in the family played with the slingshot present.

Outside!

The weather finally caught on that it is spring and has been delightfully warm and sunny. We are thoroughly enjoying the outdoors!

Ruthie got to hold her first rabbit at a friend’s house.

IMG_4289

Biking buddies…

IMG_4300

And after seventeen years of having sons in the family, we at long last invested in a basketball hoop.

IMG_4304

So far it has proven to be quite the male bonding experience for all the boys. As you can see in the video, they have the added challenge of avoiding the little kids drawing with sidewalk chalk at the end of the driveway.
